The key difference between the National Standard Building Contractor "B" (ICC G12) and the National Standard Residential Building Contractor "C" (ICC G13) lies in the scope of work each license allows:
Class B (ICC G12) – Building Contractor Allows contractors to construct, remodel, or repair commercial buildings up to three stories as well as residential structures. Exam covers the 2018 International Building Code (IBC), 2018 International Residential Code (IRC), and Concrete Manual.
Class C (ICC G13) – Residential Contractor Limited to one- and two-family dwellings and townhouses up to three stories. Exam focuses solely on the 2018 International Residential Code (IRC). In short, Class B contractors can work on both commercial and residential projects, while Class C contractors are restricted to residential projects only

Contractors of Colorado - B License General Contractor Course
The National Standard Building Contractor “B” ICC G12 Exam is one of the most comprehensive licensing exams in the construction industry — covering both residential and commercial building knowledge, codes, and field-tested expertise.
To help you master the material without being overwhelmed, we’ve redesigned the course into two focused phases. This format makes the learning more flexible, practical, and tailored to your success — allowing you to absorb foundational knowledge first, then level up with advanced topics after a short break.
Class B Course Structure
Part 1: Residential Focus (Weeks 1–4) IN-PERSON LEARNING
Build a solid foundation in residential general contracting — the same curriculum
offered in our standalone Residential GC Course. Nearly half of the B License Exam covers residential code, so this is critical to your success!
Optional Break: You can roll right into Part 2 or take a full month off & rejoin at the start of
the next month.
Part 2: Commercial & Advanced Topics (Weeks 5–8) VIRTUAL LEARNING. Tuesdays & Thursdays 6PM - 8PM.
The program transitions to a live online format, led in real-time by our Course Instructor. Allowing you to come back recharged and ready to tackle more complex material, including commercial construction methods, licensing exam prep, and real-world strategies to help you succeed as a B License General Contractor.
To obtain your Class C General Contractor license in Colorado, you must pass the National Standard Residential Building Contractor “C” (ICC G13) Exam through Pearson VUE. Our course fully prepares you with structured instruction, textbook mastery, and realistic exam simulations.
For the Class B General Contractor license, you'll need to pass the more advanced National Standard Building Contractor “B” (ICC G12) Exam, also administered via Pearson VUE. This course offers in-depth coverage of the 2018 IBC and IRC codes, reinforced by comprehensive exam strategies tailored to the Class B scope
After completing either course:
We’ll assist you in finding a Pearson VUE testing center and navigating the registration process.
Once you pass the exam, we’ll guide you through applying for your license with the proper state or municipal authority.
Whether you're pursuing Class C (G13) or Class B (G12) licensing, our goal is the same: equip you with the knowledge and confidence to pass your exam and launch your contracting career in Colorado.
Our exam prep courses are taught in English, as the ICC contractor exams are primarily administered in English. However, the International Code Council (ICC) does offer some exams in Spanish, depending on the jurisdiction and exam type. To determine if the Class B (ICC G12) or Class C (ICC G13) exam is available in Spanish, we recommend checking directly with ICC or Pearson VUE, the official testing provider. If Spanish-language support is needed, some jurisdictions may allow candidates to bring an interpreter, but this requires prior approval.

We’re proud to share that our program has a 98% first-try pass rate. While other programs might “guarantee” a pass, the truth is—you are the one preparing for and taking the exam.
That’s why our instructor, Matt, focuses on making sure you’re truly ready to pass. With comprehensive practice exams and proven strategies, you’ll leave the program with both the confidence and a clear game plan to succeed.
And if you need extra support? We’re here—local, flexible, and committed to helping you cross the finish line.
This license is for contractors, builders, and home service professionals who want to pull permits, oversee projects, and operate legally as a general contractor. Many of our students use it to grow their own business, while others use it to advance within an existing company.
The exam itself is national, but licensing is issued at the local level. That means after you pass, you’ll apply for your license with the building department in the city or county where you want to work. Each jurisdiction in Colorado governs its own process, and we’ll walk you through what that looks like.
Yes. Every building department requires documented experience before issuing a license.
For the Residential Contractor license, you’ll typically need at least two years of hands-on residential contracting experience. This can include direct project management, trade work, or advanced project design if you hold a construction-related college degree.
For the Commercial Contractor license, the bar is higher. You’ll generally need a minimum of four years of verifiable experience on commercial job sites, specifically in a management role. In most cases, applicants are already working as superintendents or project managers for larger general contractors before they qualify to apply.
Because requirements vary by jurisdiction, the best step is to review your background with our instructor. With years of experience guiding contractors through the licensing process, he can help you interpret your work history, identify which license you qualify for, and outline the documentation you’ll need to present to your local building department.
Yes. We make sure you have the exact edition of the code book required for your exam.
Here’s why that matters: sometimes the licensing exams are still based on an earlier edition of the code, even though newer versions are being used out in the field. If you walk into the exam with the wrong book, it can throw you off.
Our program is designed to remove that risk. We’ll provide the correct, exam-approved code book so you can focus on studying and passing — without worrying about whether you bought the wrong edition.
While many contractors love our in-person program, we understand it can be challenging in today's busy world. That's why we developed 100% online option. It's taught by our same instructor, but provides flexibility for your schedule.
